Engie, historical Belgian electricity supplier
Originally, Engie (formerly Electrabel, then Engie Electrabel) was the result of the merger of three major Belgian energy companies (Intercom, Ebes and Unerg). For several years, the company has ensured the production, supply and distribution of electricity throughout Belgium. Since the early 2000s, the liberalization of the energy market forced Engie to split its activities.
To do so, Engie created a series of entities, run by the municipalities: intercommunal companies and more recently, DSOs. Their purpose? To ensure the distribution of electricity. During this transition, the company (that was then called Electrabel) integrated the French energy group Suez (to become GDF Suez).
On 24 April 2015, GDF Suez officially announced a change of name to “Group Engie”.
As energy producer, Engie is best known for its active role in the development of nuclear power plants. It is indeed Engie that operates the plants at Tihange and Doel.
Today the company is the largest producer and energy supplier in Belgium.
Means of communication and billing are up to the customer
Engie gives its customers the opportunity to contact them via numerous channels. So, you can call by phone or use a live chat and communicate via e-mail. The latter is however not available to customers who have chosen the web-based “Fixonline” product that is no longer marketed.
Most deals allow choosing the type of billing (by regular mail or e-mail) and payment preferences (bank transfer or direct debit). Please note that payment by Zoomit is also available. All these options can be easily managed through the e-services section and the customer space available on the Engie website. This also allows you to make energy arrangements associated with moving house.
Discounts for new customers often apply to most contracts. These welcome promotions are very important but always limited in time. We invite you to always compare your electricity and/or gas rate once the promotion expires.
A closer look at different rates
Is Engie the cheapest electricity supplier? And for gas? Only a price comparison will tell but what is for sure is that there are a great many Engie products.
A lot of them are similar, but it is still possible to identify some major trends. Each product usually comes with a variable deal and a fixed deal.
Easy Fixe électricité and Easy Variable électricité are Engie’s classic deal par excellence. This is also true for gas. As their names suggest, these two versions provide the choice between a fixed or a variable rate. Since 1 April 2016, consumers can also add these products to the “100% vert, 100% belge” (“100% green, 100% Belgian”) deals to support green electricity. So, you have the Easy Fixe ”100% vert, 100% belge” deal and the Easy Variable ”100% vert, 100% belge” deal.
This new green option has enabled Engie to get rid of some products, such as the Green deal. When analysing the Green rate card, we note that the contribution to renewable energy had been removed while the kilowatt hour (kWh) price was higher than the Easy rate. In the end, in terms of price, Green products were therefore a few euros more expensive than their Easy equivalents. Engie put forward this rate given its Green aspects, certifying 100% green and 100% Belgian electricity. Conversely, regarding gas, Green and Easy products were identical.
In addition, the ActiveGreen deal for electricity and gas has been removed too. It allowed freezing the price of energy for two years and included subscription to SMART services. Indeed, it had no place to be, with the new green options implemented by the electricity and gas supplier.
Finally, the Fixonline deal, which was available until April 2016, has been replaced by another “online” product, Direct electricity (Direct option 100% verte, 100% belge) or Direct gaz. Designed to respond to an increasingly connected audience, Direct is a one-year variable rate contract for electricity and gas. It can be managed on the Internet, i.e., online customer contact (via chat or e-mail) and billing is by e-mail. Another feature here is that direct debit is required. Direct is currently the cheapest Engie deal (excluding promotions).
Apart from this last product, Engie always adds attractive promotions to its contracts for new customers. If you are not yet an Engie customer, you can take advantage of promotions that can drastically reduce your energy bill for the first year. To be sure to enjoy the best energy rate once these promotions have expired, it is important to regularly make a comparison. This is to make sure you avoid any unpleasant surprises at the end of the year.
