Luminus (formerly SPE) is a leading producer and supplier of gas and electricity in Belgium. Since 2011, the company belongs to the French group EDF and can boast to be the second Belgian energy provider after ENGIE.

EDF Luminus, first challenger on the Belgian energy market

SPE (Société productrice d’électricité, or electricity producing company) was established in 1978 following the merger of several small producers and inter-municipal companies.

In the early 2000s, as a direct result of the liberalization of the energy market, SPE became the default provider of certain municipalities. Shortly afterwards, it merged with Luminus, a supplier already present in Flanders. Then, as of 2009, EDF, the large French energy group, bought a majority stake in the company becoming fully integrated in 2011. Thus appeared the name EDF Luminus, but the company continues to use the Luminus brand for its supply activities in Belgium.

As a producer of electricity, EDF Luminus has many stakes in Electrabel Engie’s nuclear power plants. But it also invests in thermal power and hydroelectric stations as well as in green energy by exploiting dozens of wind turbines present in Belgium. These commitments allow it to represent about 10% of the total installed capacity in Belgium.

Traditional customer service and the benefits of My Luminus

Luminus makes several communication channels available to its customers. The electricity and gas supplier can in fact be contacted by phone, e-mail or regular mail. Only its energy deals exclusively available on the Internet require total management from the My Luminus platform.

This consists of an online client area. Its goal: to allow customers to easily track their energy consumption and consult their bills. They can also change the amount of their payments, their personal data, and compare their consumption with that of similar homes.

Luminus rates in detail

The Luminus rate cards are varied and often adorned with discounts for new customers. These welcome deals help drastically reduce the energy bill the first year. This is why it is important to compare again your electricity and/or gas deal once the temporary promotions have ended. For your information, all Luminus electricity products have their gas equivalent with the same name.

Luminus Ecoflex

Luminus Ecoflex electricity or Ecoflex gas is an energy contract whose duration is two years and whose per kilowatt hour (kWh) prices are variable. During this period, the electricity or gas rate will be re-evaluated every three months. This offer is particularly suitable for people who want to support the renewable energy sector. Indeed, in addition to offering green electricity, Ecoflex promises 100% carbon neutral gas. To do so, Luminus is committed to funding projects working to reduce CO2 to the amount of its customers’ consumption.

Regarding the billing method, it depends on individual preferences. Luminus’s advantages are included in the services granted. Namely, Ecoflex is particularly attractive in the first year through related promotions.

Luminus Essential

Luminus Essential electricity or Essential gas is a variable rate contract for a period of one year. It is one of Luminus’s 100% web products. With it, contracts are managed online and bills are received via e-mail. Also, payments must be made by direct debit. These different features make the Essential deals cheaper than Ecoflex but it is not marketed in the Brussels region.

Luminus Click

Concerning Click electricity or Click gas, it is a 100% web-based, one-year fixed-rate contract. It tends towards the fixed rate of the Essential deal except that here the annual fee is more attractive.

Luminus #BeGreen Fix

#BeGreen Fix electricity or #BeGreen Fix gas, previously Ecofix, is a fixed-rate contract whose price is frozen for one year. Luminus guarantees 100% green electricity for this contract as well as 100% carbon neutral natural gas.

Luminus Optimal

The Optimal electricity or Optimal gas contract offers a per kWh price indexed for one year. It entitles customers to full service from Luminus, that is to say access to My Luminus, choice of payment method and participation in actions and competitions.

Luminus Optifix

The Optifix electricity or Optifix gas deal ensures identical prices for two years. Attractive thanks to its low annual fee, it requires payment by direct debit and is only available in Flanders and Wallonia.

Luminus Basic

Basic electricity or Basic gas is a product that can be purchased via the Internet and which has indexed energy prices. Here, there are no promotions or exclusive discounts and it is managed from My Luminus.

Besides, it is a contract that has no time limit and is only intended for the Flemish and the Walloons.

Exclusive services and benefits to make life simpler

In addition to the classic supply of electricity and gas, Luminus offers a series of benefits and additional services designed to facilitate the management of your energy budget.

  1. Luminus EXTRAS!: this deal, reserved for residential customers, is to help them reduce their energy impact and bills. It lays on competitions, activities focusing on sport, health, as well as discounts on Luminus services and subscriptions.
  2. Luminus Bonus: Luminus offers customers a reward if they reduce their electricity consumption. For every 100 kWh less than the previous year, the company awards a premium.
  3. Luminus Check-up: every year, Luminus provides its customers with an estimate of their consumption so they can check if the amount of their payments should be adjusted or not.
  4. Luminus Bicycle Assistance: in the event of a puncture, accident or theft of their bicycle, the customer receives assistance up to twice a year. They will not have to pay anything for repair and/or transportation.

Luminus Home Solutions: everything for the home!

To round off its range of services, Luminus has developed several that revolve around the theme of the home.

  1. Boiler maintenance: Luminus has introduced a gas or oil boiler maintenance scheme. The service can be reached 24/7 knowing that all Luminus technicians are licensed and therefore able to provide a statutory maintenance certificate.
  2. Luminus Electro Repair and Replace: this service offers the possibility of extending the legal warranty of certain appliances up to 5 years. If a fault occurs, an authorized technician will come to repair the device within 48 hours. The problem isn’t solved? The customer then receives a new device free within 5 days.
  3. Solar panels: Luminus, in partnership with Dauvister, undertakes the installation of solar panels. The company also provides a hotline that can be contacted if the installation fails.
  4. Service Confort: this service is subscription only and ensures assistance and protection of your home in the event of emergencies. A leaky roof, a broken window, a power outage... For all these unfortunate surprises, Luminus responds within 24 hours.
