Watz, a Belgian alternative to the multinationals

Like Elegant, Watz is a small, 100% Belgian energy supplier of Flemish origin. It has been operating in the north of the country since 2012 for electricity and since 2013 for natural gas. It then embarked on the challenge of establishing a presence in Wallonia, which it achieved in March 2017. In Brussels, however, it serves only business customers.

Watz’s activities are therefore confined to selling energy to private individuals and businesses. In other words, the company does not produce any energy but buys it from the wholesale market. It is criticised on this point by Greenpeace, which argues that such energy comes mainly from coal-fired and nuclear power plants. However, Watz claims that it offers renewable electricity. To achieve this, it buys guarantees of origin solely from Belgium (and mainly from Flanders). This choice is in keeping with its positioning as a 100% Belgian, local supplier.

Regarding its values, Watz’ watchwords are clarity and transparency. The company has therefore chosen to offer a single pricing plan for its two products in order to highlight the simplicity of its offer.

Efficient and dedicated customer service

Watz attaches particular importance to its Belgian identity and the human aspect of its customer service. On its website, the gas and electricity supplier states that “it is always ready to find solutions” to consumer queries. It is also keen to showcase its staff by stating, for example, that they “bend over backwards to provide the best service” and that they “really know their job”.

Watz can be contacted in several ways: by telephone phone and email, and via a contact form. Customers also have access to a personal online space called “my watz”. Among other things, this allows customers to find out how much electricity and/or natural gas they have consumed, check their latest energy bills and receive advice on how to reduce their bills.

Finally, bills can be paid by direct debit or bank transfer. The good news is that this second option is available at no extra cost.

A single, variable-rate pricing plan for gas and electricity

Watz wishes to establish a relationship of trust with its customers and is therefore committed to clear, transparent pricing. As a result, it does not offer temporary discounts for new customers as it prefers to standardise its prices for everyone. It also makes sure that its contract are clear and unambiguous by getting rid of the small print.

Specifically, Watz offers variable prices that are indexed every three months, for both its gas and its electricity deals. In keeping with its promise of transparency, the Belgian supplier also promises to advise customers when market price fluctuations affect the tariffs it applies. Lastly, Watz has defined the contract period as one year.

These conditions apply to its residential and its business customers. The only difference between them is the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) applied.

To find out whether Watz offers the cheapest energy deals, the only way to tell is via a comparison of the prices offered by all the players in the energy market. We therefore invite you to use our comparison of electricity and natural gas contracts currentlyavailable in Belgium.
